Evaluation of DSM as Carrier for Nasal Administration of APIs

In a recently started diploma project at MVIC member company, Magle Chemoswed, selected qualities of DSM and their suitability as carriers for nasal administration of pharmaceuticals are under evaluation.

MVIC member company, Magle Chemoswed AB, has developed thirteen types of biodegradable starch microsphere (DSM) families with varying characteristics for wide use in medical device and drug delivery applications. In a recently started diploma project, selected qualities of DSM and their suitability as carriers for nasal administration of pharmaceuticals are under evaluation.

Relevant physical properties are studied at Magle Chemoswed’s Solid State laboratory. Inhalation and analytical testing are performed in collaboration with the MVIC member company Emmace Consulting using Iconovo’s nasal device ICOone® for the inhalation tests.

Head supervisor is adjunct professor Kyrre Thalberg, formerly inhalation formulation specialist at AstraZeneca. The diploma student is Rojda Unal from the Faculty of Engineering (LTH), Lund University, and we welcome her as a prospect to become one of the new generation’s inhalation experts.
